Meet Claude Monet

Begin with the Meet the Artist page. Read the easy facts together and invite children to notice what made Monet interested in light, color, outdoor painting, and water lilies.

Look, Talk and Search

Use the two Look and Talk cards for Water Lilies and Impression, Sunrise. Ask the included observation questions, then use the Impression, Sunrise I Spy page to help children look carefully for details.

Finish with Coloring

Give children the coloring page inspired by Monet's paintings. Encourage them to choose colors they notice or remember from the artwork, or to make their own color choices.

Adaptations

  • For younger children, ask one simple question at a time and let them point before answering.
  • Use partner talk so children can share what they notice before speaking to the whole group.
  • For older children, ask them to explain what detail in the painting helped them form an answer.
  • At home, complete one page at a time and use the discussion cards for relaxed parent-child conversation.
