How to make name tracing worksheets

  1. Type a name, or paste your whole class list with one name on each line.
  2. Choose capital first letter or all capitals, the letter size and the tracing style.
  3. Click Print. Every child gets a page with their own name.

Why start dots and arrows help

The first row shows the name in dark letters. A green dot marks where each stroke starts and a red arrow shows which way to go, so children learn to form letters from the top, the way handwriting programs teach. The next rows fade to dots for tracing, and the last row is empty for writing the name alone.

Ideas for using them

  • Morning work in the first weeks of school.
  • Sheet protectors: slide a page into a sleeve and trace with a dry-erase marker again and again.
  • Portfolios: print the same page in September and in spring to see how writing grows.
