Meet Claude Monet

Begin with the Meet the Artist page and mini book. Introduce the simple facts about Claude Monet, then display the five painting posters so children can become familiar with his artwork.

Use the Look and Talk cards to guide observation. Encourage children to look carefully before answering the questions.

Look Closely at the Paintings

Use the painting posters with the I Spy pages and painting puzzle. Children can explore:

  • Water Lilies
  • Impression, Sunrise
  • The Japanese Footbridge
  • Woman with a Parasol
  • Stacks of Wheat (End of Summer)

Ask children what they notice about colors, weather, water, light, people and outdoor places.

Make Art Like Monet

Choose one or both step-by-step art activities. Children can create a Water Lily Pond with paper and tissue-paper flowers or go outside to observe changing colors and make art inspired by Monet's outdoor painting.

Finish with the coloring pages, Paint like Claude page, My favorite painting page or certificate.

Adaptations

  • For younger children, focus on one painting at a time and use simple observation questions.
  • For older or more verbal children, ask them to explain why they notice a certain mood, color or weather detail.
  • For homeschool use, spread the posters, mini book, I Spy pages and art activity across several short lessons.
  • For a shorter classroom lesson, choose one painting poster, one Look and Talk discussion and one related art or coloring page.
